The Democratic Republic of Congo has this week filed another formal complaint at the International Criminal Court (ICC) asking the court to ensure that it does not consider what it calls the military coup of its militias in eastern Congo by the Rwandan National Army (RDF) and the M23 rebels.

The ICC has already had an ongoing investigation in eastern Congo since 2004 and has yet to confirm whether the new charges will change the direction of the court.

The Congolese Ministry of Justice said in a statement that "The government of the DRC remains deeply concerned about the suffering of workers in parts of its territory affected by the actions referred to in this case."

The statement also added that the purpose of the prosecution would be to investigate and prosecute anyone involved in human rights violations between 2022 and 2023.

The M23 group launched new attacks in eastern Congo in March last year, destroying towns and villages in the area bordering Uganda. The fighting forced more than 1 million people to flee their homes.

As Congo points to Rwanda for supporting the M23. The government of Rwanda does not allow any kind of involvement.

The ICC Prosecutor’s Office has not released any details other than that the target is the alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed since July 2002 in the Ituri region and the provinces of North and South.

The prosecutor of ICC Karim Khan is expected to visit the regions of Kinshasa and Congo affected by the terrorist groups from May 28 to May 31.
