On Saturday, June 28, 2025, Iran held a funeral ceremony for around 60 people\u2014including top military officials and nuclear scientists\u2014who were killed during a 12-day war with Israel.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Coffins wrapped in Iranian flags, adorned with portraits of the fallen commanders, were displayed near Enghelab Square in Tehran, surrounded by thousands of mourners.<\/p>\n

The conflict had ended earlier in the week following a ceasefire, after the United States directly struck Iranian nuclear research sites.<\/p>\n

A large crowd dressed in black gathered in mourning, waving Iranian flags and holding up pictures of those killed in the conflict.<\/p>\n

Before the funeral, a government-led media campaign encouraged mass attendance. Free buses and trains were provided, and government offices were closed for the day.<\/p>\n

Among those buried on Saturday was Mohammad Bagheri<\/strong>, a high-ranking Iranian general and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n

Bagheri was laid to rest alongside his wife and daughter, who also died in the Israeli strike. In total, Iranian authorities reported 627 deaths<\/strong> in Iran.<\/p>\n

Israeli officials stated that 28 people<\/strong> were killed in Israel due to Iranian missile strikes, according to a BBC report.<\/p>\n

Also buried were Hossein Salami<\/strong>, the former Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi<\/strong>, a nuclear physicist and president of Azad University in Tehran.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
