Some residents of Buramba Village<\/strong>, located in Kavomo Cell, Nyundo Sector<\/strong>, Rubavu District<\/strong>, say they have recently been invaded by a group calling themselves Abanjongo from Kivumu Sector<\/strong> in Rutsiro District<\/strong>, who have come to illegally mine a precious mineral called Beleri<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

The locals say they were unaware that their lands contained such valuable resources and were shocked to see this group take over their fields, digging forcefully and aggressively. Anyone who dared to question them was reportedly threatened or mistreated.<\/p>\n

Jean de Dieu Niyigena, the village leader of Buramba<\/strong>, described the situation as chaotic:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been total disorder. We face constant attacks from people coming from Kivumu and Nyamyumba sectors. They destroy citizens\u2019 farmland without any benefit to the owners. After they mine, they leave the land barren.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Some of the landowners say since discovering that their land holds minerals, they\u2019ve lived in fear and sleeplessness.<\/p>\n

Beatrice Nyiramagambo<\/strong> said:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThese minerals have brought us nothing but a curse. We can\u2019t sleep anymore. We\u2019re supposed to be working, but we stay here watching over our fields so they don\u2019t light fires in them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Leonard Ntawurengumunsi<\/strong> added:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThey come in like an armed gang\u2014strong men with machetes, picks, and sticks. If you’re the landowner, they\u2019ll chase you away while digging up your property, and you\u2019re not allowed to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Beyond digging up fields, the group has also begun tunneling near people\u2019s homes<\/strong>, leaving them at risk of collapsing. One resident, Ladislas Ngezenubwo<\/strong>, reported that his house is now in danger of caving in.<\/p>\n

Locals familiar with Abanjongo<\/em> say the group has long been engaged in illegal mining, and they call on security forces<\/strong> to intervene or even relocate residents<\/strong> so they can live in peace.<\/p>\n

They add that reporting the group is pointless, as they operate like a militia<\/strong>, intimidating anyone who dares to speak.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cEven if some get arrested, by the next morning they\u2019re back. It\u2019s like dealing with terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

When contacted, Western Province Governor Jean Bosco Ntibitura<\/strong> said he was not yet aware of the situation but promised to follow it up with local authorities to ensure these thugs no longer terrorize the population.<\/p>\n

Illegal mining<\/strong> has become a growing national security issue<\/strong>, as many unlicensed operators mine recklessly, sometimes causing fatal accidents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
