The government of Niger has announced that terrorist fighters launched two major attacks<\/strong> in the western part of the country near the Burkina Faso border, resulting in the death of 10 government soldiers<\/strong>, according to the Ministry of Defense.<\/em><\/p>\n

In a statement broadcast on national television, Defense Minister General Salifou Modi<\/strong> said that the attacks were carried out simultaneously<\/strong> on Friday, July 4, 2025<\/strong>, by hundreds of mercenary jihadists<\/strong> in two locations<\/strong>: Bouloundjounga and Samira, both in the Gotheye area<\/strong> in western Niger.<\/p>\n

The Ministry\u2019s statement read:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIn these attacks, 10 government soldiers lost their lives, and 15 others were injured.\u201d
\u201cOn the enemy side, 41 mercenary fighters were also killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Gotheye area<\/strong>, which borders Mali<\/strong> and Burkina Faso<\/strong>, remains one of the regions most affected by terrorist activity, where armed groups often launch attacks\u2014especially against the military-led government that took power in July 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Samira zone<\/strong> is also economically strategic<\/strong> for Niger, as it hosts the country\u2019s only active gold mining site<\/strong>, which supplies materials to processing industries. However, this site has been frequently targeted<\/strong> by suicide bombers and terrorists.<\/p>\n

In May 2025<\/strong>, a vehicle transporting gold mine workers in Samira hit an improvised explosive device (IED)<\/strong> planted on the road, killing eight people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For over a decade<\/strong>, Niger has been plagued by attacks from armed groups<\/strong>, including Al-Qaeda<\/strong> and the Islamic State<\/strong>, with most fighters infiltrating through neighboring Mali<\/strong> and Burkina Faso<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The military junta<\/strong>, which seized power after overthrowing President Mohamed Bazoum<\/strong>, claimed that one reason for the coup<\/strong> was the previous government’s failure to contain terrorism.
