{"id":226167,"date":"2025-07-12T10:13:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T08:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bwiza.com\/?p=226167"},"modified":"2025-07-13T12:55:59","modified_gmt":"2025-07-13T10:55:59","slug":"drc-demands-answers-after-uganda-reopens-borders-with-m23-controlled-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bwiza.com\/?p=226167","title":{"rendered":"DRC Demands Answers After Uganda Reopens Borders With M23-Controlled Areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"310\" data-end=\"561\"><em>The <strong data-start=\"314\" data-end=\"370\">Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)<\/strong> has announced its intention to <strong data-start=\"402\" data-end=\"439\">demand an explanation from Uganda<\/strong>, following <strong data-start=\"451\" data-end=\"499\">Uganda\u2019s decision to reopen border crossings<\/strong> connecting it to areas controlled by the <strong data-start=\"541\" data-end=\"560\">M23 rebel group<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"563\" data-end=\"703\">This week, <strong data-start=\"574\" data-end=\"632\">Uganda reopened the Bunagana and Ishasha border points<\/strong>, following a directive issued by <strong data-start=\"666\" data-end=\"702\">President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"873\">Kampala said the move was aimed at <strong data-start=\"740\" data-end=\"771\">reviving cross-border trade<\/strong>, which has been in decline since <strong data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"818\">June 2022<\/strong>, when the borders were closed due to the M23 conflict.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"1193\">Following a Cabinet meeting on Friday, <strong data-start=\"914\" data-end=\"960\">DRC Government Spokesperson Patrick Muyaya<\/strong> stated that <strong data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"1019\">Foreign Minister Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Kayikwamba Wagner<\/strong> had been tasked with <strong data-start=\"1041\" data-end=\"1087\">seeking official clarification from Uganda<\/strong> on why it chose to reopen the border <strong data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1192\">without the presence of any Congolese government representative<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1436\">Uganda, on its side, explained that the <strong data-start=\"1235\" data-end=\"1269\">closure of the Bunagana border<\/strong> was costing the country <strong data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1342\">about 500 million Ugandan shillings annually<\/strong>, a significant economic loss that contributed to its decision to reopen the border crossings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced its intention to demand an explanation from Uganda, following Uganda\u2019s decision to reopen border crossings connecting it to areas controlled by the M23 rebel group.
