{"id":43534,"date":"2022-01-07T09:29:36","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T09:29:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.bwiza.com\/2022\/01\/07\/eu-pressures-uganda-government-to-release-kakwenza\/"},"modified":"2025-02-25T19:15:41","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T17:15:41","slug":"eu-pressures-uganda-government-to-release-kakwenza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bwiza.com\/?p=43534","title":{"rendered":"EU  pressures  Uganda government to release Kakwenza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Union (EU) has joined other rights bodies in demanding the unconditional release of Ugandan novelist and activist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, held incommunicado for more than a week despite court ordering police to free him.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet on Wednesday,  Mr Eamon Gilmore, the EU special representative for human rights, urged the authorities in Kampala to release Mr Kakwenza, who was kidnapped by gunmen on December 28 and disappeared until police acknowledged holding him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUganda: I\u2019m alarmed by reports of alleged torture and incommunicado detention of author [Rukirabashaija Kakwenza]. He remains in detention without trial, despite a court order for his unconditional release. I urge Ugandan authorities to uphold rule of law and due process,\u201d  he tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gilmore\u2019s concerns were shared by Ms Maria H\u00e5kansson, the ambassador of Sweden to Uganda, who expressed \u201cfull support\u201d for the EU representative.  <\/p>\n<p>The EU delegation to Uganda, which manages the \u201cEU-Uganda relations, programmes and activities\u201d also supported the call in response.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gilmore, a former deputy prime minister, and minister of foreign affairs of Ireland is charged with enhancing the presence, effectiveness and visibility of EU human rights policy in the EU external actions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Union (EU) has joined other rights bodies in demanding the unconditional release of Ugandan novelist and activist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, held incommunicado for more than a week despite court ordering police to free him.
