Health authorities have raised an alarm after donations of blood type O recently decreased, a situation they say could lead to a \u201ccrisis\u201d in the coming days.<\/p>\n
The Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) collects 300 sachets of blood daily and hospitals use over 900 units every day.<\/p>\n
According to the RBC, currently there are enough quantities of blood for types A, B and AB in their blood banks, but stocks of type O are shrinking.<\/p>\n
\u201cUsually, blood donation is voluntary, but it happens sometimes that donations of one type are not proportional to the other types, which leads to shortages like the one we\u2019re facing currently,\u201d Dr. Thomas Muyombo, head of the National Centre for Blood Transfusion at the RBC, said on August 13.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, we are calling for more donations from people with blood type O in order to prevent acute shortages, which could lead to the level of a crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n
As type O negative is compatible with all blood types, and O positive compatible with all positive blood types, Dr Muyombo said shortages are not rare.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause O\u2013 is the universal donor and is often used in cases of emergency transfusions, there\u2019s always the likelihood of shortages,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
