On Friday, May 23, President Paul Kagame visited the Nyakabingo mine, located in Shyorongi sector, Rulindo District.

This mine is recognized as the leading source of Wolfram (Tungsten) in Africa, known for its high yield.

Wolfram is a rare and heavy metal used to produce ultra-strong materials in construction, aircraft, tanks, satellites, guns, ammunition, and other high-durability tools.

Nyakabingo’s Wolfram is highly valued for its purity and is exported to Austria, with 1,107 tons shipped in 2024 alone.

The mining operations are run by Trinity Metals Group, a mineral extraction and processing company.

Photos shared by the Rwanda Presidency on its official X account show President Kagame inside one of the tunnels of the mine.

According to the Office of the President, over 1,800 people are employed in mining and mineral value addition activities at this site.

The mine has five tunnels, the longest stretching 800 meters horizontally into the mountain and 120 meters deep underground.

Justin Uwiringiyimana, Managing Director of Trinity Nyakabingo, recently stated that the site holds enough reserves to support mining for at least 40 more years.
