At least 10 people were confirmed dead during anti-government protests in Kenya by Monday evening, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).

As reported by Felix Maringa, a DW journalist in Nairobi, police had blocked roads leading into the capital early in the morning to prevent protesters from gathering in the city center.

A police statement released later revealed that more than 560 people were arrested across the country during the protests on Monday, July 7, 2025.

The statement came shortly after a KNCHR report, which estimated that 11 people had died and many police officers were injured.

On that Monday, protesters were commemorating the July 7th demonstrations, known as “Saba Saba,” the first major protest in Kenya which took place 35 years ago.
