The United States government has warned its citizens against traveling to 21 countries around the world, including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The DRC, along with the other countries on the list, has been categorized as Level 4 — the highest alert level.
The U.S. government defines countries at this level as extremely high-risk, and notes that it has limited or no ability to assist American citizens in these areas should they need urgent help.
It told its citizens:
“These places are very dangerous; therefore, you could put yourself in serious trouble if you travel there.”
The countries the U.S. advised its citizens to avoid include those plagued by war, conflict, or those with tense or hostile relations with the U.S..
Besides the Democratic Republic of Congo, the other countries on the list are:
Afghanistan, Belarus, Burma (Myanmar), Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Yemen.
