Burundi Deploys Additional Troops to Eastern DRC Amid Escalating Conflict

Sangiza iyi nkuru

In response to escalating tensions in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Burundi National Defence Force (FDNB) has dispatched additional troops to the Fizi and Uvira territories. This deployment aims to counteract the advances of armed groups, notably the M23 and Twirwaneho militias, which have been accused of expanding their control in the highlands of South Kivu.

Recent reports indicate significant movements of Burundian soldiers in strategic areas such as Bijombo and Minembwe, raising concerns about potential large-scale confrontations in the region. These developments follow intense clashes in locations like Kahololo and Rugezi, where Burundian forces, alongside the Congolese army (FARDC) and allied militias, have engaged in combat with rebel factions.

The FDNB’s increased presence in the area is part of a broader strategy to fortify military positions and prevent further incursions by rebel groups. This move underscores the complexities of the regional security landscape, where various armed factions vie for control, often leading to significant humanitarian and geopolitical implications.
