The world’s richest man and tech mogul, Elon Musk, has announced the creation of a new American political party called the America Party, aimed at challenging the traditional two-party dominance in the United States.
On Saturday, he posted on X, his social media platform:
“When it comes to our country being ruined by waste & corruption, we are effectively in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is founded to restore your freedom.”
Musk has spent hundreds of millions of dollars supporting Trump in the last election, and he led what was dubbed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under Trump’s administration—an initiative meant to cut what was seen as excessive government spending before disagreements became public.
This week, Musk revived the idea of launching a new political party as U.S. lawmakers passed Trump’s proposed tax and spending bill.
Musk was among the critics of this legislation and declared his intention to form a new party to oppose the Republicans who supported the bill.
On Friday, he posted a poll on X asking users whether it was time to “break free from the two-party (or some say one-party) system.” Over 1.2 million responses were received, with more than 60% in favor of a new party.
