Mr. Lungele Mbiso, who was in charge of communication in the office of the Governor of South Kivu province (on the side of the DRC government under Jean Jaques Perusi in Uvira Territory), was reportedly shot dead in the chest by a FARDC soldier and died instantly.
This happened over the past weekend when a FARDC soldier, ranked Captain, shot and killed this staff member from the Governor’s office in South Kivu. In retaliation, angry civilians lynched the soldier using sticks and stones.
It is said the shooting stemmed from a heated dispute between the Governor’s staff and FARDC soldiers, although sources did not clarify the origin of the disagreement.
The incident took place in Uvira, which now serves as the temporary capital of South Kivu province after the AFC/M23 rebel group captured Bukavu on February 16, 2025. Bukavu is traditionally considered the provincial capital.
Bukavu is now under the control of AFC/M23, which has already installed its administrative structures from the provincial level down to local authorities.
This incident in Uvira occurred at a time when the Congolese government continues to concentrate a large number of its troops in the area, including mercenaries recruited from Colombia to help combat the M23 rebel group.
This situation is intensifying war tensions, with reports indicating that the Congolese government is planning elite military offensives to recapture major cities such as Goma and Bukavu, which are not far from Uvira.
This comes shortly after the government signed a peace agreement with Rwanda aimed at ending the long-standing conflict in Eastern Congo, including the Uvira region where these new war plans are unfolding.
