The Intermediate Level Prosecution Office in Huye is investigating a 44-year-old man suspected of burning his 5-year-old son using a heated machete.
The incident occurred on August 7, 2025, in Gihama Village, Mbuye Cell, Kibirizi Sector, Nyanza District, at his home around 4:00 PM.
According to the National Public Prosecution Authority, during interrogation, the suspect admitted that he burned the child on the arm, fingers, hand, and shoulder using a machete he had heated in a cooking fire. He claimed he did it as punishment because the child had touched a pot of beans that was being cooked. He asked for forgiveness.
If found guilty of inflicting severe punishment on a child, he faces up to 3 years in prison and a fine of 300,000 Rwandan Francs, in accordance with Article 28 of Law No. 71/2018 of 31/08/2018 on the protection of the child.
