The Government of Rwanda, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and the City of Kigali, has announced the continuation of a project to upgrade and improve housing in the Nyabisindu area of Gasabo District. The project is scheduled to be implemented over the course of one year and will focus on relocating more than 1,600 residents who have been living in substandard conditions, to modern housing units equipped with all necessary infrastructure.

Nyabisindu to Be Transformed Like Mpazi
The Minister of Infrastructure, Jimmy Gasore, explained that the Rwandan government is investing in upgrading poor housing conditions to improve the wellbeing of citizens. He noted that such a project aims to move away from past practices where people built informal settlements, and instead promote dignified, modern, and well-planned urban living.
Minister Gasore said:
“This project reinforces the Rwandan Government’s goal for sustainable urban development. It’s not just about building houses, but also about restoring dignity, increasing infrastructure, and reducing unplanned settlements.”
The City of Kigali states that the work will focus on four villages within Nyabisindu: Nyabisindu, Amarembo I, Amarembo II, and part of Remera. New multi-unit housing will be built—comprising 58 buildings—to accommodate families previously living in unplanned and informal conditions in the area.
Samuel Dusengiyumva, the Mayor of Kigali, also emphasized that the redevelopment of Nyabisindu is a major milestone in Kigali’s broader urban transformation.
He added that Kigali is being developed in line with climate change and the needs of citizens, and that the city will continue investing in sustainable housing that brings pride and structure to Rwanda’s capital.
The project will cover an area of 38.54 hectares and will also include key infrastructure such as a market, schools, commercial spaces, parking lots, and roads. It is expected to provide a lasting solution to the long-standing issue of poor housing conditions in Kigali, especially in the Nyabisindu area.
