On Wednesday, Nairobi residents were forced to take long detours after police blocked major roads leading to the Central Business District (CBD) ahead of planned youth demonstrations.

Youth in the country have organized protests in Nairobi and other major cities to denounce police brutality, abductions, and injustice, as they mark the first anniversary of last year’s deadly demonstrations.

In preparation for the protests, police intensified their operations and closed key roads leading to Parliament to prevent a repeat of last year’s attempted break-in by protesters.

An investigation by The Star newspaper revealed that large numbers of anti-riot police had been deployed at Parliament and surrounding areas.

Police were also stationed on major roads leading into Nairobi, including Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road, Thika Road, and Ngong Road.
