On Wednesday, June 25, at least eight people were killed as thousands took to the streets to mark one year since deadly protests erupted last year.

Reports say police officers in plain clothes were seen shooting at protesters who were demonstrating against the government.

According to Amnesty International, the actual death toll could be as high as 16.

On Wednesday, Kenyan authorities shut down the Parliament and the Presidential offices in Nairobi and banned live broadcasts of the demonstrations, as reported by various media outlets.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) stated that all the deaths were a result of gunshot wounds.

KNCHR also reported that at least 61 people were arrested across the country.

In a similar month last year, around 60 people were reportedly killed when security forces clashed with demonstrators angry over tax hikes.

While last year’s protests subsided after President William Ruto suspended the controversial tax bill, public anger over police brutality remains widespread.

The recent death of a blogger in police custody earlier this month has further inflamed tensions.
