Kenyan security agencies have announced the arrest of a police officer accused of shooting a civilian who was not part of the protests held on Tuesday. The protests were organized in response to the death of a blogger allegedly killed by police.
Kenya Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) immediately ordered the arrest of the officer and that he will face justice.
On Tuesday morning, footage shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Citizen TV showed two police officers beating a man on the head with batons. As the man attempted to flee, one of the officers shot him.
The man collapsed instantly, prompting protesters to cry out: “You’ve killed him!”
Witnesses at the scene said the victim was a street vendor and had not been part of the demonstration.
Meanwhile, the protests saw a rise in the number of unidentified men on motorcycles wielding clubs and crude weapons, attacking demonstrators and beating them.
Security agencies have launched a thorough investigation into the incident, although concerns remain high, especially since Kenyan police have repeatedly been accused of excessive force and torture during protest dispersals.
