The City of Kigali has announced plans to relocate traders and artisans operating in Gisozi’s artisan zone (Agakiriro) to the Kigali Special Economic Zone, aiming to enhance safety and prevent recurring fires in the area.
This decision follows a major fire that struck the zone on May 30, the latest in a series of blazes affecting the site known for its metal and wood workshops.
Emma Claudine Ntirenganya, spokesperson for the City of Kigali, told The New Times that the relocation is part of a broader plan to improve operations, enhance safety, and promote stable infrastructure.
“Stored materials must be separated from production areas because they increase fire risks,” she said. “The final relocation site hasn’t been confirmed yet, but only traders with finished products will be allowed to retain shops in Gisozi, in line with land use and safety regulations.”
The city administration says the relocation plan is still being designed, and the implementation timeline will be announced after reviewing infrastructure and selecting suitable locations.
Meanwhile, authorities are inspecting other wood-selling zones across Kigali to ensure they comply with health and safety regulations to protect both lives and property.
