The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have strongly denounced a wave of coordinated rocket attacks claimed by the M23 rebel group against its positions.
In a statement on Tuesday, Major Nestor Mavudisa, spokesperson for FARDC’s Third Military Zone, said that on July 12, M23 launched successive assaults on government positions in Kamatembe and Kalao, both in Mubuku groupement, Kalehe Territory.
Not stopping there, M23 reportedly attacked again on Monday, July 14, targeting Kashihe, another village in Kalehe.
On Monday morning, July 15, the rebel group struck FARDC positions at Mwendabandu, in Banyungu groupement, Masisi Territory. The officer noted:
“Fighting in Mwendabandu lasted the entire day.”
Mavudisa added that the rebels also mounted another attack on military positions above Batanga village, in Irambi Katana groupement, Kabare Territory.
FARDC emphasized that while these attacks did not result in large-scale casualties, they appear intended to undermine the ongoing peace talks between the DRC government and AFC/M23 in Doha.
Both sides accuse each other of mounting attacks while peace negotiations continue.
