The IWI Galil ACE rifle, also sold under the name IWI ACE (or simply ACE), is a family of military assault rifles originally developed and manufactured by Israel Weapon Industries (IWI). Today, they are also manufactured in Rwanda at REMICO, a company that collaborates with IWI.
Modern Design
The Galil ACE rifles are based on the original Galil platform, but redesigned with a modern layout to enhance performance and reduce weight, while keeping the original Galil’s reliability and ease of maintenance during combat situations.
The design places special emphasis on durability and reliable operation under harsh combat conditions.
Weight Reduction
The original Galil was made using heavy steel to ensure structural strength and durability. Unfortunately, this caused the rifle to weigh up to 4.4 kilograms, depending on the variant, and that was one of the main criticisms by the Israeli military.
The Galil ACE has significantly reduced weight. IWI reengineered the rifle using steel-polymer composites, which are much lighter than the steel used in the original Galil.
Used by RDF in Mozambique
Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF) soldiers deployed in Mozambique are among the forces using the Galil ACE rifle.
Accuracy
As reported by American Rifleman:
“Although this rifle is based on the AK platform, it demonstrates a much higher level of accuracy compared to many of its counterparts.”
Trigger Mechanism
The Galil ACE features the trigger mechanism from the Galil Sniper rifle, rather than the standard Galil, to increase precision and reliability. It uses a two-stage trigger system.
Weapons Manufacturing in Rwanda
The Rwanda Engineering and Manufacturing Corporation (REMICO) produces military equipment for the RDF and supports friendly nations in acquiring defense equipment.
REMICO is located in Gasabo District within the Kigali Special Economic Zone. It manufactures weapons for ground forces, special forces, counter-terrorism, riot control, and marksmanship training.
