Two people have died from an unidentified illness in Makamba Commune, which was recently integrated into the new Burunga province in southern Burundi. As health officials say they are investigating the source of the disease, concerns continue to grow in villages bordering Tanzania.

The first deaths were reported in the areas of Murambi, Nyakazi, and Bukeye, all located near the border. Locals suspect the disease may have come from the neighboring country, according to this report by SOS Médias Burundi.

A worried resident named Bukeye said: “We’re scared. We’re being told it came from Tanzania, but we don’t know what it really is.”

Alarming Symptoms and Rising Fear

Infected individuals are showing frightening symptoms: sudden fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, extreme fatigue, and difficulty breathing. These unusual signs have sparked widespread panic among the population.

One local leader stated: “People are deeply worried because we don’t know the origin of this disease.”

Investigation Underway

On Friday, July 4, the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight Against AIDS sent a team of infectious disease experts to the commune. Their mission: to collect samples and thoroughly investigate the causes behind the spread of this mysterious illness.
