DRC: Fighting Resumes in Both Kivus Between M23/AFC Rebels and Pro-Government Coalition

On the morning of Tuesday, June 24, 2025, heavy fighting broke out between M23 rebels and pro-government armed groups known as the Wazalendo (CMC), led by Dominique Ndaruhutse, in the Bwito area of Rutshuru Territory, North Kivu Province.

The clashes occurred in the villages of Bipfura and Kanyatsi, within Bukombo Groupement, where residents reported the sound of heavy and light weapon fire starting as early as 4 a.m.

The fighting triggered panic among civilians, leading to mass displacement. Many residents fled towards Mashango and Mwesso, nearby areas in Masisi Territory.

These clashes follow weeks of continuous violence in various parts of Rutshuru, including Bambo, Tongo, and Kihondo, where battles are ongoing and affecting the local population.

Both the M23/AFC and Wazalendo forces are reportedly increasing their troop presence and reinforcing their positions, which could further deteriorate the already fragile security situation.

Meanwhile, the coalition of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), the Burundian Army (FDNB), FDLR, and Wazalendo launched new offensives against M23/AFC, which includes both M23 and Twirwaneho factions.

The fresh clashes began early Tuesday morning in the Cirunga area of Kabare Territory, South Kivu Province, with reports of intense fighting between both sides.

Although the combat lasted nearly three hours, sources say the M23/AFC rebels managed to repel the attacking forces, forcing them to retreat in disarray.

On Sunday, Congolese troops and their allies also launched an attack on M23 positions in parts of Kalehe Territory, which borders Kabare where Tuesday’s fighting erupted.

Currently, M23 continues to control significant areas in both Kabare and Kalehe—territories seized by AFC/M23 before advancing toward Bukavu, the provincial capital of South Kivu.
