In Homa Bay, Kenya, over 2,000 residents, including students from Mawego National Polytechnic, held an extraordinary protest by carrying the body of their peer, Albert Ojwang, to the police station.

Albert Ojwang, a freelance journalist and blogger, died in police custody on June 7, 2025.

According to a medical report, his death resulted from severe head trauma due to beatings. Locals have rejected the police’s explanation, instead accusing security forces of being involved in his death.

Videos circulating on social media show students in uniform and villagers from different communities carrying Albert’s coffin, chanting songs denouncing police brutality and violence.

The symbolic act served as a powerful statement of grief and rage, with residents demanding justice and an independent investigation into Albert’s death.

This incident comes amid rising public outcry over police brutality in Kenya, especially among the youth calling for police reform.
