The Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) has announced a temporary suspension of prayer gatherings held at the Jesus of Mercy Sanctuary located in Ruhango District, due to concerns over the safety of worshippers.
In a letter dated May 17, 2025, addressed to Bishop Balthazar Ntivuguruzwa of the Diocese of Kabgayi, RGB explained that the site where the prayers are held does not meet the required standards for ensuring public order and safety.
This decision was made following an assessment of the prayer gathering held on April 27, 2025, during which a large crowd caused disorder and several people were injured.
RGB stated:
“To safeguard the lives of the worshippers, monthly and annual prayer gatherings have been suspended until solid safety measures are put in place.”
The Jesus of Mercy Sanctuary is one of the most visited religious sites in Rwanda, drawing more than 80,000 pilgrims each month. It is considered a sacred place where many claim to receive miraculous healings from various illnesses.
Earlier in 2025, the sanctuary was recognized internationally, making it onto the global list of official Jesus of Mercy pilgrimage sites.
