The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Sudan has firmly denied widespread rumors on social media claiming that President Salva Kiir Mayardit has died.
In a statement released on Thursday, the East African country’s government confirmed that the information is false and meant to spread confusion and suspicion. The statement emphasized that President Kiir is in good health and continues to carry out his duties as head of state.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan categorically denies the rumors circulating on social media claiming that His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit has passed away,” the statement read.
“We wish to assure all South Sudanese, the region, and the international community that President Salva Kiir Mayardit is alive, healthy, and fully performing his national duties,” it continued.
The government strongly condemned the spread of these false claims, calling them a deliberate attempt to incite unrest and panic in the country.
“The Ministry strongly condemns the dissemination of these fabricated reports aimed at provoking unnecessary instability, confusion, and disturbing the country’s peace. These lies only serve the interests of those who seek to undermine our national unity, the peace we have fought for, and sustainable development,” the statement added.
South Sudan gained independence in 2011 but has faced political instability, particularly the conflict between President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
Despite ongoing political challenges, the government maintains its commitment to improving citizens’ lives and fulfilling its state responsibilities.
