The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has dismissed reports from South African media alleging that it neglected its troops deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC). These reports claimed issues such as the lack of transportation for troops returning from Goma and an overall disregard for their welfare.

In an official statement released on May 20, 2025, SADC labeled these allegations as “unfounded and misleading,” asserting that all logistical arrangements for the deployment and withdrawal of SAMIDRC troops were executed according to established protocols and in coordination with all relevant stakeholders.

SADC emphasized its commitment to regional peace and security, highlighting that the phased withdrawal of SAMIDRC troops from the eastern DRC, initiated on April 29, 2025, was conducted in an orderly and coordinated manner.

The organization also reaffirmed its dedication to supporting diplomatic and political efforts aimed at achieving a sustainable resolution to the conflict in the eastern DRC.

These clarifications come in response to concerns raised by the South African National Defence Union (SANDU) and political parties regarding the welfare of South African troops in the DRC. SANDU reported receiving complaints from members about unpaid allowances and inadequate provisions.

SADC’s statement aims to address these concerns by assuring that all operations related to SAMIDRC are conducted with the utmost regard for the welfare of the troops and in line with international standards.
