The AFC/M23 rebel group has accused the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) of killing four of its members, describing it as a deliberate act of war despite ongoing peace negotiations between the two sides.
The group’s spokesperson, Lawrence Kanyuka, stated that the DRC armed forces killed the individuals in South Kivu Province.
“On July 12, 2025, the national army killed four of our comrades in Cirunga groupement. This clearly shows that the government does not value the ongoing peace talks and instead harbors malicious intent,” he said.
According to the civil society organization in Kabare Territory, two of the victims were primary school teachers from Kabare 1 School, who had just left a national exam collection center in Canya.
Kanyuka also warned the Congolese people and the international community that the DRC government is amassing troops and heavy weapons near AFC/M23 positions, a sign of potential preparation for war.
The group warned that war could break out if the DRC government continues to militarize while peace negotiations are still ongoing in Qatar.
