On Monday, June 16, Togo suspended broadcasts of the French state-funded international media outlets RFI and France24 for three months, accusing them of bias.
The suspension comes as political tensions rise between President Faure Gnassingbé of this West African nation and opposition groups.
In May, President Gnassingbé assumed a new role as head of a permanent Council of Ministers, a position with no term limit.
Two opposition parties, Democratic Forces for the Republic and National Alliance for Change, denounced the move as a “constitutional coup” that could allow GnassingbĂ© to remain in power for life.
RFI and France24 had been covering protests organized by opposition supporters who oppose the constitutional reform that gave Gnassingbé this new position.
