The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has praised the new peace agreement signed between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, calling it a major milestone toward peace and security in the Great Lakes region.
The agreement was signed on Friday, June 27, 2025, by Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olivier Nduhungirehe, and his Congolese counterpart, Thérèse Wagner Kayikwamba, in the presence of U.S. envoy Marco Rubio.
The deal focuses on mutual respect for territorial integrity, ending support to armed groups, and peaceful conflict resolution.
A key component of the agreement is the commitment to eliminate the FDLR rebel group, which is accused of terrorism and links to perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
The agreement also outlines joint security cooperation, regional economic development, and support for the voluntary return of refugees and internally displaced persons, aiming for lasting peace and shared progress.
Via X (formerly Twitter), Guterres thanked the United States for facilitating the process and assured that the UN will continue to support the implementation of the agreement.
The deal was welcomed by leaders and politicians around the world, who see it as a new opportunity to restore calm in eastern Congo and the entire region.
