In Gatsibo Sector, Gatsibo District in Eastern Rwanda, Ndungutse Balthazar, a 73-year-old man, has become known for something quite unusual: he has chosen never to marry and firmly says he never will.
In an interview with TV1, Balthazar confirmed that he has never married in his life, and that even the idea of doing so has never crossed his mind.
He said: “I made a vow. I don’t want a wife.”
The elderly man explained that he chose a life of devotion to God, entering into a spiritual covenant with the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.
He stated: “I made a vow with the Virgin Mary. This ring I wear is a symbol of my love and loyalty to her.”
Balthazar strongly rejects those who label him as “impotent”—a term used to describe someone incapable of engaging in sexual relations. According to him, his decision not to marry was not out of failure or lack of opportunity, but rather a personal calling that he willingly embraced.
