The government of Burkina Faso has announced it foiled an attempted coup aimed at overthrowing Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Authorities claim the plot was orchestrated by individuals based in Côte d’Ivoire.

On Tuesday, the Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, revealed that the attempted coup involved both serving and former military officers allegedly linked to extremist leaders.

He explained that the plotters had planned to attack President Traoré’s residence and create unrest that would pave the way for foreign control of the country.

Sana added that the coup conspirators had also coordinated with terrorist groups in the Sahel region to intensify attacks on both the army and civilians, aiming to destabilize the country.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré has led Burkina Faso since 2022 after seizing power in a coup. Over the past three years, multiple coup attempts have been reported, including one in November last year.

The government confirmed that this latest attempt was foiled last week, with several soldiers — including two officers — arrested for their involvement in the plot.
