The body of Pope Francis was transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, where he will be honored before his burial scheduled for Saturday. Over 20,000 mourners gathered in St. Peter’s Square to pay their final respects.
On Wednesday morning, pallbearers carried the open casket from the chapel of Casa Santa Marta, where the Pope passed away. The procession was led by cardinals dressed in red and the Swiss Guards in their traditional gold, yellow, and blue uniforms.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell presided over the procession. He will temporarily oversee the Vatican until a new Pope is elected to succeed Pope Francis, who died on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, 1936, Pope Francis had led the Catholic Church since 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.
