Tensions Soar: Russia Strikes Ukraine After Germany Threatens Tougher Sanctions

On Tuesday, Ukraine’s Air Force confirmed that Russia launched ten drones into Ukrainian territory — all of which were intercepted and destroyed by Ukraine’s air defense systems.

This attack follows Germany’s harsh warning of new sanctions against Russia if it failed to halt its military operations by midnight.

On Monday, German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius stated that Berlin was coordinating with its European partners on stronger sanctions, saying:

“The clock is ticking. We have 12 hours until the day ends.”

This deadline was in response to Russia’s refusal to agree to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, a proposal originally introduced by the United States back in March, according to Euronews.

The Kremlin reiterated its willingness to engage in peace talks that could begin later this week without preconditions. However, it has not yet responded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s invitation for direct talks with President Vladimir Putin in Turkey this Thursday.

On Monday, Zelenskyy posted:

“Russian missiles and attacks continue. Moscow has remained silent all day on the invitation to meet directly. A worrying silence.”

He also fully endorsed U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” and expressed support for Trump personally joining the proposed meeting with Putin.

Trump said he’s optimistic about the Istanbul peace talks and is considering attending after returning from his planned visit to Qatar and the UAE on the same day.
