The President of the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Vital Kamerhe, recently concluded a working visit to Kampala, during which he met with Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
This visit took place between May 9 and 12 and followed Kamerhe’s participation in the Pan-African Parliamentary Leadership Summit.
According to Radio France Internationale (RFI), Kamerhe was accompanied by four Members of Parliament, and the trip had both diplomatic and parliamentary objectives.
Sources report that Kamerhe delivered a “special message” from President FĂ©lix Tshisekedi to Museveni, primarily aimed at evaluating the security situation in Eastern DRC.
Various sources linked to the visit indicate that it is part of a series of ongoing talks between Kinshasa and Kampala, which have been in motion since November 2024, with the aim of strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Kamerhe’s meeting with Museveni comes at a time when DRC and Rwanda are reportedly preparing to sign peace and mineral cooperation agreements.
At the same time, Kinshasa is said to be cautious about excluding Uganda from regional dynamics, given its strategic military and political importance in the Great Lakes region.
During his meeting with Kamerhe, Museveni reportedly expressed no particular concerns, but reiterated his desire for regional peace, stressing that the ongoing insecurity in Eastern Congo threatens Uganda’s interests.
Both Kampala and Kinshasa reaffirmed their commitment to their joint military collaboration through Operation Shujaa, in which the Ugandan army (UPDF) partners with DRC’s FARDC to combat the ADF terrorist group.
