Burundian opposition politician Alexis Sinduhije, a vocal critic of the ruling CNDD-FDD party, says the only way to solve Burundi’s deep-rooted problems is by completely dismantling the ruling regime, which he claims is leading the country to ruin.
Sinduhije, the leader of the Movement for Solidarity and Democracy (MSD)—a party no longer authorized to operate in Burundi—made these remarks in an interview broadcast on Radio Peace FM, a youth-focused radio station.
He also stated that he fully supports Red Tabara, an armed group fighting the Burundian government, calling them “heroes of Burundi” who will rescue the nation from overwhelming crisis.
“I strongly support Red Tabara because they are brave Burundians who want to save the country. Red Tabara is already at work, clashing with Burundian forces in Congo and forcing the FDNB (Burundian army) out of several positions.”
Sinduhije dismissed claims that he collaborates with the Gitega government, pointing out that over 6,000 MSD members are currently imprisoned, and 13,000 have been killed, many buried in unknown locations.
He emphasized that about 70% of Burundian refugees still in exile are MSD supporters, and as their leader, he vowed never to collaborate with the CNDD-FDD government but to continue fighting until it is removed completely.
Regarding the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 5, 2025, Sinduhije described them as a sham, urging all Burundians to boycott the elections and refuse to vote for CNDD-FDD.
“These elections are meaningless to the Burundian people.”
He said the only paths to overthrow the government are through mass protests, like those of 2015, or armed rebellion, though he acknowledged the latter might cost many lives.
Sinduhije reaffirmed his commitment to resistance, declaring he would keep fighting against President Évariste Ndayishimiye’s regime until CNDD-FDD is toppled.
