The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has issued an alert over the widespread presence of unexploded ordnance in several parts of North Kivu Province.
Destin Nalanda, an expert from the ICRC specialized in monitoring the impact of weapons on civilians living near conflict zones, said that certain areas of Goma city are littered with dangerous explosives.
Nalanda explained that these bombs are remnants of clashes that occurred earlier this year when the M23 rebel group took control of Goma, displacing the coalition of DR Congo government forces.
He stated that between January and March of this year, over 300 people were injured by unexploded devices left behind by the fighting factions.
These individuals were among more than 1,000 people injured by weapons and treated at CBCA Ndosho Hospital during that period.
The ICRC has warned residents in eastern DRC to remain vigilant and avoid touching any unknown objects, as they may be dangerous explosives.
