The coalition of forces fighting on behalf of the Kinshasa government has launched renewed attacks in areas controlled by the AFC/M23 coalition in Kabare Territory, which also includes the Bukavu airport in South Kivu province.
These offensives were carried out in two different locations on the afternoon of Saturday, June 14, 2025, as FARDC (Congolese army), FDNB (Burundian army), FDLR, and Wazalendo fighters attacked the areas of Kamole and Kagabi.
Reports indicate that these areas are located near Katana, a zone that has recently witnessed fierce fighting between both sides. The targeted locations are approximately 10 kilometers from Bukavu airport.
In recent weeks, Katana has been a flashpoint with ongoing attacks. However, the M23 rebel movement, part of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), has managed to repel each assault.
Yesterday, government-aligned fighters shifted their offensive to the outskirts of Katana, attacking Kamole and Kagabi, but were once again repelled by M23 forces.
Sources report that the clashes in Kamole and Kagabi lasted for several hours, with heavy and light weapons heard in the area, prompting civilians to flee to safer locations.
However, as of the morning of Sunday, June 15, calm had reportedly returned to those areas and their surroundings after fighting subsided the night before.
Kabare and Kalehe territories, which border each other in South Kivu, have become frequent battlegrounds since the Twirwaneho movement, allied with M23, seized control earlier this year, before capturing the city of Bukavu on February 16, 2025.
