On Tuesday, Rubavu District celebrated the International Day of the African Child in Rugerero Sector, Muhira Cell, where children from across the sector gathered alongside their parents and teachers under the theme: “Nurture Me Well for a Dignified Future.”
The event featured children’s performances, including dances and poetry, focused on their rights and the importance of proper care in early childhood to prevent issues such as stunting, school dropout, homelessness, trauma, and more.
During the celebration, children also showcased several tech-based projects they developed. These included modern handwashing stations powered by electricity, irrigation systems, public toilets, and other machines designed for various practical uses.
The children requested support to further develop these projects, emphasizing their understanding of modern technology, particularly those using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Ishimwe Pacifique – Vice Mayor in Charge of Social Affairs
In his speech, Rubavu District’s Vice Mayor for Social Affairs, Ishimwe Pacifique, stated that education is a right for all children and an obligation for parents to send them to school — which is why primary education in Rwanda is free.
He said:
“Children who are not raised properly develop bad habits, including vagrancy and dependency, becoming a burden on the government. They often face sadness, isolation, and in extreme cases, suicide or early pregnancies.”
He urged parents to be role models, as children imitate their actions. He encouraged them to instill cleanliness, cultural values, and protect their children from bad peer influence from an early age.
The celebration concluded with a nutritious meal shared with children from Early Childhood Development centers, and with donations of essential supplies such as mats, cooking pots, and other materials to support childcare.
The International Day of the African Child has been celebrated since 1991, commemorating a protest by children in South Africa demanding the right to education in their own language.
