Two major opposition parties in Uganda—Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) led by Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) led by Dr. Kizza Besigye—have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at pushing for political change and removing President Yoweri Museveni from power in the 2026 elections.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Kampala, where both sides emphasized their commitment to democracy, justice, and value-based leadership.

Alice Alaso, a senior ANT official, stated: “This is just the first step. Unity is essential if we want real change.”

This agreement follows several previous attempts at opposition unity that have failed over the years due to leadership disputes and the collapse of coalitions.

Analysts say that the shared political history and values between Besigye and Muntu could provide new hope in the fight against President Museveni, who has been in power for more than 35 years.

The new alliance is expected to release a detailed action plan in the coming days, including whether it will present a single presidential candidate to face Museveni in 2026.
