On Tuesday, a young Congolese refugee woman was arrested in Mahama Camp, Eastern Rwanda, after being accused of killing her 7-month-old baby and dumping the body in a public latrine. The Rwanda National Police has launched an investigation.

The suspect, identified as Solange Uwamahoro, was caught in the act late Monday night pouring a liquid suspected to be harmful into a latrine located in Village 15, Community 47, near her home (Family 8B).

“The village leader was informed and instructed local night patrol members to discreetly monitor her movements until the next morning. She was arrested as she attempted to flee quietly from the area,” the source said.

The lifeless body of the 7-month-old baby was later discovered in the latrine, according to a report by SOS Médias Burundi.

Medical reports indicate the baby was killed before being dumped. Some sources reveal she was reported by a neighbor.

Solange Uwamahoro, aged around 20, is currently being held in police custody.

During interrogation, she stated that she was considering returning to eastern DRC to reunite with her husband, who left a year ago. The couple has two children together.

In the camp, many neighbors claim that Uwamahoro was involved with a Burundian man believed to be the father of the deceased baby.

One camp resident testified: “She said she couldn’t go back to her husband with a child born out of wedlock.”
