Four judges from the high court of Gitega (political capital of Burundi) were arrested on Monday and then taken to the central prison of the province. They are all being prosecuted for corruption.
These are Damien Manirakiza, president of the Gitega high court, as well as three other judges of the same court, namely Tharcisse Ndikumasabo, Abel Sindayirwanira and Claude Nshimirimana.
The arrest warrant specifies that they are being prosecuted for corruption.
After being interviewed at the general prosecutor’s office at the Gitega Court of Appeal, all four judges were immediately taken to the Gitega central prison the same Monday around 6 p.m. where they are incarcerated for the moment.
At the end of August, seven other magistrates from the general public prosecutor’s office at the Court of Appeal of Gitega, the Court of Appeal of this province, the high court of Gitega and an orderly from the public prosecutor’s office were arrested and then imprisoned.
All are accused of corruption and fraud.
