The Belgian judiciary has received a lawsuit filed against members of the family of President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, accusing them of stealing valuable minerals in the provinces of Haut-Katanga and Lualaba.
Reports indicate that the complaint was submitted by lawyers Bernard Maingain and Brieuc to Prosecutor Ann Fransen on July 8, 2025.
The Tshisekedi family members are being sued in Belgium because they hold Belgian citizenship. The complaint alleges that among them is the President’s brother, Christian Tshisekedi, who is accused of seizing numerous mining concessions in Katanga and deploying military personnel to guard them permanently.
The plaintiffs have also called on non-governmental organizations operating in Haut-Katanga and Lualaba, as well as former leaders of Gécamines—the Congolese state-owned mining company—to take a stand on the matter.
A representative of the mining association in Lualaba stated:
“Since 2019, things have gone terribly wrong. Katanga has become the family’s cash box in these provinces, especially in Lualaba, yet they invest nothing in return.”
In addition to the President’s brother, the complaint also names other family members, including First Lady Denise Nyakeru, their son Anthony Tshisekedi, as well as his cousins and sister-in-law.
