Soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) regroup at an army outpost on a hill between the village of Kachiru and Mbuzi hill -- an M23 rebel position -- in North Kivu on May 24, 2012. The FARDC has been engaged in battles with M23 rebels who hold the Mbuzi hill, but have seen a relative calm since the night of May 22, taking the opportunity to reinforce their positions. Heavy Fighting Between M23 and Wazalendo in South Kivu

Intense fighting broke out on Wednesday, May 14, between the M23 rebel group and Wazalendo fighters in various parts of South Kivu Province.

The clashes occurred in the afternoon in areas such as Tchofi and Kasheke in Kalehe Territory, as well as Kabamba and Mabingu in Kabare Territory, all within South Kivu.

Wednesday’s fighting followed earlier confrontations on Tuesday, when M23 and pro-government Wazalendo forces battled around Kasheke and Remera in Kalehe.

Reports indicate the fighting lasted throughout the day. Although M23 was pushed back at first, it launched renewed offensives against enemy forces on Wednesday.

Sources say M23 received reinforcements from its troops based in Goma and Bukavu, allowing it to strike Wazalendo positions again.
