In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), opposition leader Martin Fayulu addressed a significant message on social media this Monday, June 2, 2025, titled “a call to responsibility”—a three-minute statement responding to remarks former President Joseph Kabila made about ten days earlier.

Fayulu stated:

“There is no doubt that we are living through the darkest hours in our history.”

He expressed concern over the “balkanisation” of the DRC—its division into pieces, a fear that dates back to 1960 when the country first gained independence.

Fayulu directly addressed three figures he believes are responsible: Corneille Nangaa, Joseph Kabila, and Félix Tshisekedi.

  • To Corneille Nangaa, head of the political-military coalition AFC/M23, Fayulu pleaded with him to stop being “an accomplice to this carnage,” warning that no dream should come at the cost of the people’s suffering.

  • To Joseph Kabila, who led the country from 2001 to 2019 and recently visited Goma, Fayulu criticized him for “collaborating with forces destroying our country.” He urged Kabila that the only way to atone is through dialogue—not compromise.

  • To President FĂ©lix Tshisekedi, Fayulu implored him not to abandon current generations and sought “direct, genuine dialogue” born of patriotism to find dignified solutions to the national crisis.

Furthermore, Fayulu expressed support for a “faith leaders’ forum” in Congo, referencing ongoing talks with religious authorities waiting to meet the head of state.
