On Thursday, July 10, intense fighting broke out in Mitembe/Katobo, in the Banamulindwa area (Kisimba groupement) in the Walikale Territory, located in North Kivu, between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo militias.
According to information obtained by ACTUALITE.CD, M23/AFC rebels stationed in Ihula launched an attack on Wazalendo positions—volunteer fighters claiming to defend the nation—in Matembe around 8:00 a.m. local time. The rebels were reportedly pushed back toward Ihula. The fighting is said to have lasted several hours, though the number of casualties remains unknown.
By Friday morning, the area was reportedly calm, with Wazalendo forces currently in control.
However, sources say that tensions remain high, and violence could escalate at any moment due to increasing rebel activities in the Walikale region.
Residents of Mitembe had already fled to Pinga following the initial outbreak of violence in the area.
