In France, an eight-year-old child has made headlines by becoming the youngest person ever to sit for the national high school final exam, known as the baccalauréat.
This child is registered as an independent candidate and is scheduled to take the philosophy exam on June 16, alongside more than 700,000 other students.
The Director General of Secondary Education in France, Madame Caroline Pascal, described the event as extremely rare and extraordinary, saying it’s uncommon to see such a young child sit for such a rigorous exam.
In previous years, the youngest candidate was nine years old in 2024, and twelve years old in 2023. This demonstrates that only a handful of children possess the ability to go far beyond the usual school-age limits.
In this 2025 edition, a total of 724,633 candidates will take the exam, with the oldest candidate being 78 years old.
