India and Pakistan exchanged heavy fire overnight along the Line of Control in the disputed Kashmir region, resulting in at least 43 fatalities. This marks the most severe escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in two decades.
The clashes follow India’s launch of “Operation Sindoor,” a series of airstrikes targeting what it described as terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. These strikes were in retaliation for a terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 Hindu tourists. Pakistan reported that the Indian strikes resulted in 31 civilian deaths, including women and children. In response, Pakistan claimed to have downed five Indian jets and engaged in artillery exchanges along the border, leading to additional casualties.
The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict, urging both nations to exercise restraint and seek diplomatic solutions to avoid further bloodshed.
