More than 40 individuals who called themselves “Wazalendo” (Patriots) have been arrested by the Rwanda National Police after disturbing the peace of residents in Rukara Sector, specifically in the cells of Kawangire and Rwimishinya, located in Kayonza District.
These individuals were allegedly carrying traditional weapons such as machetes and clubs, attacking residents, and forcibly entering their farms to dig for termite soil (used in traditional medicine or construction).
The issue of this group of lawbreakers was reported by locals, who said they were living in fear. Those who attempted to report the group’s activities to security authorities were also targeted and mistreated by the same group.
Following the growing threat, security agencies including the Rwanda National Police launched an operation and managed to apprehend around 40 of them, while others who were collaborating with them escaped.
Currently, efforts are underway to track down the remaining fugitives so they can be held accountable for the harm they caused to citizens.
Security institutions are urging the public to report such incidents promptly so that threats to public safety can be dealt with swiftly.
