A British soldier stationed at the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) in Nanyuki has been arrested over an alleged rape committed near the military facility.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred last month when a group of British soldiers visited a local bar in Nanyuki.
One of the soldiers is accused of sexually assaulting a Kenyan woman after leaving the venue, according to a report from Kenyans.co.ke.
This arrest comes amid ongoing investigations involving other British soldiers accused of sexual violence against Kenyan women, with growing calls for more effective accountability and improved access to justice.
Police have reportedly interrogated the suspect, and investigations are still ongoing. Meanwhile, the UK Ministry of Defence has taken over the matter.
A spokesperson from the Ministry confirmed the arrest, stating: “We can confirm that a person serving in Kenya has been arrested.”
The spokesperson added: “Unacceptable and violent behaviour has no place in our armed forces. Any report of a serious crime involving service personnel is subject to an independent investigation…”
They declined to give further details, citing an ongoing inquiry being conducted by the military’s serious crime division.
This development comes as Kenya still awaits the conclusion of an investigation into the murder of Kenyan athlete Agnes Wanjiru, allegedly killed by a British soldier in 2012.
